My Cousin Wayne

Brenda. I was so sorry to hear about Wayne's passing. I was down in St. Martins for a few days on the Labour Day weekend, visiting with cousin Randy while he was home from Alberta. We talked about Wayne and some of the things we used to get into when we were kids.  I guess in those early days I remember walking "over town" with Wayne while visiting on summer vacation.  That would have been in early sixties I suppose. Wayne was a year older - we would "wash up" in the basin near the kitchen sink, relieve ourselves in the :"outhouse" and hit the road, down over the hill, past the canteen at the caves, walk along the beach, see the fishing boats sitting in the mud if the Funday tide was out, make loud noises while walking through the covered bridge, maybe skipping rocks, then admiring the really nice homes in the village, maybe stopping for a cold pop at Hutchens store before going on up to the ball diamnond if Uncle Donald and the Mets were playing  a team from out of town.  Maybe if we were a little older we would somehow get a small bottle of Shark's Tooth Rum and see what trouble we could get into.   Later when I got a job at CHOV and moved to Pembroke, Wayne was there to show me around, and I always had a warm welcome when I'd stop by, (if he wasn't out playing cards somewhere)   Sherry and Dereck were just small children in those days.   Time catches up to all of us.  I won't be able to get up there for the memorial service, but rest assured I will always have good memories about Wayne, and always remember him with a smile.     Percy "Sonny" Hatfield
